The Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine is a leading centre for clinical genomics in Europe with integrated clinical, scientific, research and informatics teams. We will take you on a journey from what happens in the laboratory, how we test DNA and interpret the information from these tests, to how results are delivered to the patient.  This event is on the first floor and does not have disabled access.

Genomics and how it is transforming medicine

Professor Bill Newman (Professor of Translational Genomic Medicine)
Genomic information is becoming an increasingly important part of mainstream medicine, helping clinicians provide better diagnosis and inform treatment and patient management. Prof. Bill Newman, Clinical Geneticist, talks about how research and initiatives such as the 100,000 genomes project are helping us to have a greater understanding of genetic variation and how this is being translated into patient care.

Genomic Medicine –Behind the scenes

Dr. George Burghel (Clinical Scientist)
The Genetics Laboratory is responsible for preparing DNA samples and providing a wide range of routine and specialist genetic investigations. Advances in genome technology are driving advances in genomic science, and techniques such as DNA microarray and whole exome sequencing are helping us to provide a comprehensive and increasingly personalised diagnostic service for our patients. George will give you an insight into how our team of scientists, technologists and bioinfomaticians work together to achieve this.
