Oliver Buxton
Co-ordinator
Having spent a few years in industry, I returned to academia to complete a PhD in material science. After sneaking into a PoS talk two years ago, I was keen to get involved to help share the experience with those who are interested. Two years later I’m now helping co-ordinate PoS in Manchester!
Simon McCormack
Co-ordinator
After working in industry for several years, I have come back to university to expand my opportunities through a PhD in material science. I have been a going to Pint of Science talks for years and after volunteering last year have returned to coordinate this years event in Manchester.

James Haughton
One-off events/Committee
I am a fourth year PhD student researching microstructural modelling of soft tissues. I love that my area combines the mathematical and biological sciences. My other hobbies include playing video games, watching films and TV, reading and quizzing, and I have a season ticket at FC United.

Khadisha Zahra
Media Secretary
A 3rd year PhD student, my research focuses on N-doped graphene to improve fuel cells. I started volunteering with PoS in 2017 as a one-off-events team leader, then I co-coordinated the Manchester team and now I am media secretary. I’ll be one of the people pestering you with festival promotions!

Hannah Wilson
Planet Earth
I am a third year PhD chemist, researching lanthanide-doped upconverting nanoparticles for sensing applications, with interests in biotechnology and spectroscopy. Outside of science, I enjoy playing the piano, recreating Lion King scenes, and all things arty or edible.

Maddy Hurry
Our Body
I’m a second year PhD student researching the role of the gut-brain axis in stroke. Passionate about education, outreach and the interaction between science and society. Lover of science, pints and festivals (though not necessarily in that order!).

Arika Hisatsune
Atoms to Galaxies
I’m a Research Master student in Chemistry trying to develop a novel NMR technique for mixture analysis. A lover of sports, science, and great open-minded people. I especially like teaching and learning analytical chemistry. Research is not always easy, but I try to think like a proton!

Robert Marvin
Atoms to Galaxies
I'm a PhD student researching filtration for oil-water separation. I've attended PoS for the last three years and find it a great way to unlock your inner geek! If there are 3 things I enjoy, it's a cold pint, talking science and experiencing the outdoors (sadly, all 3 are hard to achieve simultaneo...

Jake Elms
Planet Earth
I'm in the third year of my CDT PhD and my research project is based around the reactions of ingested sands and dusts in gas turbine aircraft engines. My degree was in chemistry but the project is really multidisciplinary and encompasses aerospace engineering, materials science and geochemistry. Kee...

Aranzazu Carmona Orbezo
Committee & Planet Earth
Born and raised in Mexico City. After spending some years working in industry, I decided to pursue my dream of becoming a scientist. I love researching about water treatment methods, specially the ones that use electrochemistry. If I’m not in the lab, you will find me knitting or dancing.

Jill Merlini
Beautiful Mind
I’m currently undertaking a master’s in neuroscience and hoping to follow it up with a PhD in Manchester. I’m particularly interested in post-stroke recovery and developing new therapeutic strategies. PoS is the perfect way to get the public interested in our research!

Jessica Moulton
Committee Member & Beautiful Mind
I am a third year CDT PhD student currently working on understanding how and why some marine coatings are more susceptible to failure. I’m currently working on modelling the behaviour of coating systems using novel systems. I’ve chosen to help with the organisation of PoS this year to engage the pub...

Tech Me Out
I am a second year PhD student researching the high temperature mechanical behaviour of environmental barrier coatings for aero engines. Out of research, I really enjoy cycling, travelling and discover the local pubs around. I’ve never heard of PoS before moving to UK but I am so excited to be part...

Helen Williams
Treasurer
I am a post-doctoral research associate in Immunology researching the role of S. aureus in Atopic Dermatitis pathology. I really enjoy public engagement activities and love translating science to the general public. I have attended a number PoS talks over the years and now I am excited to be involve...
