Will Computers Ever Be Secure?

These days, it feels like news reports about data security breaches are commonplace. It looks as if the attackers won and securing IT systems is a Sisyphean task. In this talk, I will motivate the challenges of building secure systems and provide insights into the (fundamental) question of whether we can build a computer program that decides if a system is secure or not.

5G or Wi-Fi: which will be better?

Bolin Chen (PhD Student, Electrical & Electronic Engineering)
5G mobile communication is the next major phase of mobile telecommunications standards. Although Wi-Fi has advantages like robust standardization, established ecosystems and its wide AP footprint, it still needs enhancement in coverage, mobility and network efficiency like 5G will offer. Bolin will discuss his research to examine whether 5G and Wi-Fi will improve quality and network capacity. Find out if 5G and Wi-Fi will keep you connected.

What's behind the little white search box?

Professor Paul Clough (Professor in Information Retrieval)
Search is ubiquitous and we use it all the time, like searching the web. Often it's performed through a little white search box, but what do people think goes on behind this? This is about uncovering people's mental models and their perceptions about systems. I'll explain in general terms some of the techniques and technologies that go behind the little white search box and make services like Google tick.
