Do you sometimes feel like men and women cannot possibly belong to the same species? Aside from the social disparity between the sexes, research has revealed various biological differences and even squabbles between men and women. These affect not only our bodies, but also our behaviour. Join William and Anthony on an exploration into genetics and find out why sex really matters. This night is kindly sponsored by the MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics.
Sex on the brain: why males and females differ in their vulnerability to mental health conditions
Dr William Davies
(Senior Lecturer in the Schools of Psychology and Medicine)
William is a Senior Lecturer in the Schools of Psychology and Medicine at Cardiff University. He will be talking about investigations in animal models and healthy and clinical human populations to identify genetic and hormonal mechanisms that may contribute towards gender differences in behaviour and gender-biased vulnerability to mental health conditions.
Foetal growth, maternal care and the battle of the sexes in your genes
Professor Anthony Isles
(Professor of Molecular and Behavioural Neuroscience)
It might not seem like it, but our maternal and paternal genomes are locked in battle. This “intragenomic” conflict epitomises the “selfish gene” idea, and at its centre are the imprinted genes. I have worked on understanding the physiological role of these imprinted genes for over 20-years and, based on research done in Cardiff and elsewhere, I hope to persuade you that intragenomic conflict has shaped the key defining features of mammals, namely in utero foetal growth and maternal care.
