Join us at Pint of Science to hear about new technology is impacting our lives at Tech Me Out. Dr Fares Yousefsi will talk AI and how to keep your identity, jobs and money safe. Dr Omar Aldhaibani will ask us if we are ready to live with robots? Dr Andreea Font will take us into space to tell us how galaxies are made and how to use AI to do this.

Is Your Job, Money, and Identity Safe? Security in the Age of AI and Emerging Technologies

Dr Fares Yousefi (Senior Lecturer)
Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming our world, but it is also creating new cyber risks. From AI-generated scams and deepfakes to sophisticated identity theft and financial attacks, the question many people now ask is simple: Are our jobs, money, and identities truly safe?
This talk explores how emerging technologies such as AI, Blockchain, Brain-Computer Interfaces, and Quantum Computers are reshaping the future of cybersecurity. While these technologies introduce new threats, they also offer powerful solutions from intelligent threat detection to secure digital identities and even brain-based authentication. By understanding these developments, we can better prepare for a future where cybersecurity is not just a technical issue, but a fundamental part of everyday life.

Are We Ready to Live with Robots?

Dr Omar Aldhaibani (Senior Lecturer)
Robots are no longer confined to factories or science fiction, they’re starting to appear in everyday spaces, from classrooms to public areas, interacting with people in real time.
In this talk, Dr. Omar Aldhaibani explores what happens when robots leave the lab and enter human environments. How do they learn to move safely around us? How do they recognise people and respond naturally? And how do we “train” robots before they ever meet humans?

Using AI to understand formation of galaxies like our own

Dr Andreea Font (Reader)
Rosie Bartlett (PhD student)
Salma Louhaichy (PhD student)
Neural networks are a subset of AI models that can learn to recognise patterns in data the same way the human brain does. In astronomy, there are now vast amounts of data, for which pattern recognition is beyond any human capability. Among these, there are images of millions of galaxies like the Milky Way which contain very faint light patterns imprinted from the disruption of smaller galaxies. We trained AI to find such patterns in images of galaxies generated with computer simulations and hope to soon deploy it on observations, to uncover the ancient histories of millions of other galaxies.
