The mind is an extremely complex organ: we connect brief glimpses, pictures, and sounds to past events, triggered at a moment's notice. Music can elicit emotions we thought were buried long ago, as well as exacerbating our current feelings. However, impose rules upon the mind and we can end up in a self-destructive spiral - how often have you gone on a diet and ended up eating the entire contents of your fridge?

Tuning in: The power of music for evoking emotion

Sarah Campbell (PhD student, Surrey University)
Sarah Campbell will discuss how music affects our emotions and the effects that shift work with their irregular sleeping patterns have on our emotional wellbeing.

Doing harm when trying to do good

Professor Jane Ogden (Professor of Health Psychology)
Psychology is often seen as the study of the mind but it is also the study of the body. This talk will explore how the ways we which we think influence how our bodies feel and how this can be harmful for our physical health and the reasons why we seek medical care.
