From Thou to You: The Evolution of Pronouns

Did you know that the singular 'you' is a more recent addition to the English language than the singular 'they'? While 'they' can be traced back to the 1300s, 'you' only replaced 'thou,' 'thee,' and 'thy' in the 17th century. This is just one of many surprising insights literary history offers about gender-inclusive pronouns. Contrary to current debates suggesting that pronouns challenging the gender binary are a strictly 21st-century issue, celebrated authors like Margaret Cavendish, Aphra Behn, and Virginia Woolf demonstrate that gender non-conforming pronouns have been in use for centuries and have graced some of the most celebrated novels and poems in English.
