Martin Hendry is Professor of Gravitational Astrophysics and Cosmology at the University of Glasgow, where he is Head of the School of Physics and Astronomy. He is a senior of the LIGO Collaboration – the global team at the forefront of the search for gravitational waves. In a little over three years, the detection of gravitational waves from the most violent explosions in the cosmos has gone from a dream to an almost routine occurrence, made possible by the most sensitive instruments ever built.
