Find out how researchers are tackling cancer from different angles: from treatment and diagnosis to understanding how tumours interact with the body. How immunotherapies can harness the immune system to fight cancer and why it works better for some patients than others. Discover new, painless approaches to oral cancer diagnosis. Delve into the surprising relationship between cancer and pain, and how understanding this connection could help slow tumour growth while improving patients' quality of life.

Harnessing the Immune System in the Fight Against Cancer - On a Case by Case Basis

Louis Lane (Postgraduate Researcher, Clinical Medicine)
The immune system has evolved to prevent weird cells from developing into cancers, but cancer remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide. By exploiting the brakes of the immune system - which prevent overzealous immune responses - cancer may disguise itself, enabling unchecked growth and spread. Immune checkpoint inhibitors, which cut these brakes, have revolutionised cancer treatment - but they only work for some people. Louis explores his approaches to try to determine who will benefit from this type of treatment.

Towards painless and rapid oral cancer diagnosis

Malwina Matella (Researcher, Computer Science)
Mary Paterson (Researcher, Electrical and Electronic Engineering)
Rachel Furmidge (Researcher, Clinical Dentistry)
Oral cancer is diagnosed using a painful scalpel biopsy, which is associated with long waiting times delaying treatment. We are developing a fast and painless diagnosis method using Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). In our live-demonstration we would like to show how an EIS device would be used by doctors and explain the science behind it using our prototype device on various fruits mimicking healthy and cancerous oral cancer tissues.

Does cancer feel pain?

Anthea Ma (Postgraduate Researcher, Clinical Dentistry)
Cancers feel pain - in fact, they thrive in pain. They grow and invade when stimulated by pain signals. Unfortunately, when cancers grow, neurones grow with them and in turn, release more pain signals. Not only that, patients also feel more pain as a result. What can we do to stop this vicious cycle? Can we slow cancer growth and help patients live pain free?
