A night with our climate in the spotlight! In a world of advancing technologies, we shall be exploring the cutting-edge research that is being developed to meet global net-zero goals and create a more sustainable environment for us all. Join us for a night of insights and knowledge exchange, where we will hear about the work of researchers across various disciplines coming together in unison to tackle one of the largest global crises – climate change.

The Good, The Bad and the Bio: The role of Nature's Polymers in Saving Planet Earth

Gabriel John Patrick Hamill (PhD Student, University of Strathclyde)
So plastics are bad yes? No! Plastics are actually great, because they're so versatile (hence the amount of things we use them for). But therein lies the problem. The plastics we use, as I'm sure you'll know, don't biodegrade so they're clogging up our oceans, our soil and just generally killing the planet. So as an industry and a society, we have to look to greener alternatives, like bio-polymers. My talk focusses on a key challenge behind producing versatile bio-polymers and how I looked at overcoming this through my Master’s thesis.

Coffee to Catalysts - Platinum-Decorated Carbons for Fuel Cells

Szymon Dobrowolski (PhD Student, University of Strathclyde)
Everyone wants hydrogen power, but platinum is expensive. Hydrogen fuel cells and electrolysers often use platinum catalysts. The plan? Make it cheaper. This talk explores the optimisation of platinum-decorated carbon electrocatalysts – a cheaper alternative to pure platinum – and current progress in PEM electrolysers and fuel cells. This a long process with lots of niches and creative solutions and using spent coffee ground as a carbon source is only the start!

The Rising Tide of AI

Oliver Summerell (PhD Student, University of Glasgow)
Can artificial intelligence help protect our planet? This engaging event explores how AI and machine learning can design more efficient renewable energy systems, including wind and tidal turbines. Discover real-world applications, challenges, and future possibilities, and learn how cutting-edge technology can drive a cleaner, more sustainable future for everyone.
