The Chernobyl Exclusion Zone: Radioactive Wilderness or Wildlife Reserve?

The UK is at present planning to build new nuclear power stations to replace our current ageing reactors. Nuclear is seen by some as providing a secure source of energy with low greenhouse gas emissions. By others it is seen as dangerous, polluting and expensive. Based on his extensive experience of working on the aftermath of the Chernobyl accident, Jim will discuss the environmental risks of radioactivity.

Dust, Oil and Elephants

What connects a landfill site in Gloucestershire, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and an elephant called Lewis who lives in Kenya? The answer is "environmental forensics" - the science of connections: connecting dust to its landfill source, connecting oil to its catastrophic spill site, connecting elephants to their homelands. In this talk Mike will explore the use of elemental, molecular and isotopic fingerprints to investigate environmental incidents and issues.
