Join us for an evening of three innovative talks which will cover a range of questions, including whether lightbulbs can stop crime, why we want to avoid appearing old and whether storytelling can help to maintain home language for multilingual families.
A series of talks and interactive activities by researchers from the University of Sheffield, organised by PhD students Ian Widdows and Jin Shang.

Can a lightbulb stop a crime? The truth about streetlights
Dr Jim Uttley
(Researcher, Architecture and Landscape)
Ever feel that prickle of fear on a dark street? Does darkness really equal danger? Join me as we delve into the fascinating science of street lighting and crime. We'll explore the evidence, bust some myths, and even conduct a live experiment to see how light affects your perception of safety. Plus, discover which Sheffield neighbourhoods see the biggest spike in crime after dark! Don't miss this illuminating look at the dark side of our city.

Why do we spend so much money to avoid looking old?
Daniel Clark
(PhD student, Politics & International Relations)
Anti-ageing is a multi-billion-pound worldwide industry that spreads the message that none of us should want to look like we are ageing. This talk asks why, making the case that this is an expression of cultural anxieties about death which are exacerbated by our concealment of the end of life. The result is a society in which we do not plan for the only thing that we know for definite is going to happen.

Traditional Tales, Untraditionally Told - Stories of languages and making
Dr Sabine Little
(Department of Education)
Saman Qarni
(Maker Futures Programme Assistant)
Language, culture and stories are inextricably linked. Come and join Sabine and Saman to hear how we combined storytelling and collaborative making/crafting to give multilingual families new ways to use and maintain their home language, and how to give schools the chance to recognise children's home languages. Families told stories through cardboard construction, electronics, and stop motion animation. They will be sharing the project, some of the multilingual stories, and have a mini-making session, all in 20 minutes!
