Tonight we'll combine animals and humans (not in a scary way - this is science!). We have two really insightful talks for you with University Professor and local GP Simon de Lusignan telling all about how data in health is critical to how we deliver health care. Dr Dan Horton from Surrey's Vet School asks (and answers the question) can we use science to predict which pathogens are going to cause the next pandemic, and when?

Is it Possible to Predict a Pandemic?

Dr Dan Horton (Associate Dean Research and Innovation (FHMS), Reader In Veterinary Virology)
Emerging pathogens’ are bugs that can break new ground; either jumping from one species to another or invading new populations. This can be game changing- kick starting disease outbreaks with devastating consequences. Diseases such as Ebola, Zika and Bird flu strike fear into many- but is the fear proportionate to the risk, and can we use science to predict which pathogens are going to cause the next pandemic, and when?

Routine health data are really exciting! (and important)

Professor Simon de Lusignan (Professor of Primary Care & Clinical Informatics / Chair in Health Care Management / Head of the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine)
Simon will get you really excited about the power of data – computer health data – as recorded by a GP, nurse or at hospital, to answer questions about care quality. Routine data can be incredibly useful telling us things like: Has your flu jab worked? Some patients say they get the flu right after taking the jab. Do “talking treatments” make me better? My doctor wants to send me to talk to someone to make me better, but I want a pill! Are medicines given by GP's to treat diabetes used for the same patients as in the trials used to test they work – and do they work in the "real world"?
