Stress: From the Stone Age to the Space Age
Tony Crabtree
(Lecturer Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety Management)
Stress is as old as mankind. It is complex and there is no one universal definition. Put simply, stress is an individual response to threat and pressure and a perceived inability to cope. We are each of us individuals and we react differently to situations but there are common factors. Similarly, there are different ways to cope with stress. Is stress always negative? In my talk, I describe stress, how it affects us as individuals, how we recognise it, and – importantly – how we tackle it.
Getting Boozed! The development and maintenance of alcohol addiction
James Clay
(Postgraduate Student)
Alcohol is one of the most readily consumed drugs in the UK which is no surprise considering its legal and social acceptance. Why is it then that some people are more prone to develop addictions than others and what can we do to help those that already have? Hopefully by the end of my presentation, where I will be mainly focusing on general theories of addiction, as well as, the findings from some of my own research, you too will have an in-depth knowledge to answer this question. So, grab yourself a pint – I look forward to seeing you there!
