The use of electronic digital devices form a major part of modern life. This session will look at the effects of digital devices on the eye and visual system and will also explore the means of managing these effects.

Nightmare superbugs and the impending antibiotic apocalypse: Have humans already lost?

Sir Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin G after a family holiday during August 1928. Less than 100 years later, “superbugs” resistant to every known antibiotic have recently appeared in the UK. Where do they come from? How are they transmitted around the globe? What happens when the antibiotics of last resort no longer work?

Fighting back: historical perspectives on immunology

The struggle between humans and disease-causing microorganisms is as ancient and fascinating as humanity itself. My talk will give a brief overview of the structure and function of the immune system, followed by a historical perspective on the development and impact of immunology on our society. Particular emphasis will be given to vaccinations and to the epidemiology and treatment of HIV.
