Do you practice sport and want to improve your performance? Would you like to be part of a polar expedition and want to avoid frostbites? This evening will show you how our body react to the (wet and cold) extremes...Themed fun and games will be ongoing throughout the night, with a chance to win some fantastic Pint Of Science gear!
Breathe your way to the podium
Our lungs are one of the most important organs in our bodies - how do they work under different conditions? This talk will look at how the lungs, and specifically the breathing muscles, can pose a limitation to sporting performance both in sports people with and without asthma. The talk will also explore ways that we can train and warm-up the breathing muscles to improve sporting success whether exercising at sea level or competing or working at altitude. Come and hear more about how to take a deep breath!
Ice cold, wet and deadly
Dan and Mike will describe what happens when we, as tropical animals, go into extreme cold air or water. Drawing on studies undertaken in Polar Regions, the sea and the laboratory they will describe the physiological and pathological responses to cold. Their talk will range from Walking with the Wounded to the pole, to sudden death and prolonged survival underwater. Their talk will be supported by slides and videos. It should be cool - bring a coat!
