Muscle Matters: Optimising Dietary Protein for Healthy Ageing
Jake Cox
(Fourth-Year PhD Student, University of Nottingham)
Muscle mass and strength losses are a natural part of the ageing process that can worsen quality of life by affecting mobility, independence and overall health. Dietary protein plays an essential role in maintaining muscle as we age, yet many people are unsure how to optimise their intake to slow these changes. This talk will address some of the key questions, from how much protein we need to how often we should eat it, based on findings from current research into dietary protein and healthy ageing.
From Poo to Podium - Gut Science for Better Performance
Dr Neil Williams
(Senior Lecturer in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition, Nottingham Trent University)
Join Dr Williams for a tour of your inner teammates - the trillions of microbes living in your gut. Discover how this hidden ecosystem shapes your health, wellbeing, and even athletic performance. We’ll explore where your microbiome comes from, what it does, and how dietary biotics can help train your gut to support better athlete health and performance.
Osteoarthritis - a new understanding of an ‘old’ condition
Dr Oliver O'Sullivan
(NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer and Speciality Registrar (Rheumatology & Rehabilitation Medicine). IRIS, School of Medicine, University of Nottingham)
Osteoarthritis is a very common problem of our joints, typically knees, hips and hands. It has many names, ‘rheumatism’, ‘old age’, ‘creaky joints’, but the most common word is ‘painful!’. In this talk, I plan to explain a bit more about what it is, how it can affect us and what you can do about it! Drawing on the last 20 years of research, five of which are my own, I will have fun challenging assumptions, quashing myths, and making terrible jokes. I will also give clear, practical and easy to implement tips to help people live well with osteoarthritis.
