Can you decipher what is fact and what is friction? Learn about tribology and how it is fundamental to our world in a fascinating demonstration requiring you to put your knowledge to the test. Perhaps you’d rather discover how to turn scrap metals into silver and gold? Our talk on modern-day alchemy might be the one for you. Join us for a spellbinding evening exploring the materials underpinning our world and how they might benefit you!

Tribology: Fact or Friction

Dr Scott Beamish ( Researcher, Mechanical Engineering)
Ever wondered how to build the ultimate sandcastle, or why ice is so slippery? Introducing Tribology, the most important science no one has ever heard of. Join us for an interactive experience where we will explore how nano-scale interactions help gymnasts win gold, stop freight trains, and may have even killed the dinosaurs!

Modern Day Alchemy: making new materials for optoelectronics

Dr Robert Richards ( Researcher, Electronic and Electrical Engineering)
Modern electronics relies on functional materials known as semiconductors. Within semiconductors, the interaction between light and electricity can be controlled, enabling production of devices like LEDs and solar cells. The clanking, steampunk contraptions of yesteryear have been replaced by quiet, reliable, easily miniaturised materials. In this talk, Dr Richards outlines the semiconductor design principles for the perfect solar cell. He describes how the modern-day alchemy of semiconductor engineering can realise high efficiency solar cells, as well as other devices.
