That 'thump-thump' in your chest is the most vital sign of life and our hearts are one of the most important organs, so when things wrong with our heart, it's usually a worrying sign. We will hear from three experts on the importance of calcium (the heart of the heartbeat) and the effects of high blood pressure during pregnancy.
Hypertension during pregnancy, is the offspring's health at heart?
Sol Olivera
(PhD student)
Preeclampsia (hypertension during pregnancy) can be dangerous for the health of both mother and baby. In addition, babies born after preeclampsia pregnancies have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease development later in life. By using an animal model of pregnancy, we have shown that the offspring born after exposure to high blood pressure have a worsened cardiac function compared to their healthy counterparts. This discovery opens the door to beginning to understand the link between preeclampsia and cardiovascular disease.
Calcium: at the heart of the heartbeat
Prof Will Fuller
(Professor of Molecular Physiology)
2023 marks the 140th anniversary of Syndey Ringer's discovery that calcium was one of the vital ingredients that the heart needs in order to be able to beat. The intervening years have seen an explosion of interest in the many different ways that this simple mineral helps the heart work - as well as how it goes wrong to cause disease. Professor Will Fuller will discuss his research team's recent advances about how calcium controls the heart, and the heart controls calcium.
