Join researchers from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine as they explore how health systems and technologies are being redesigned to be more inclusive and effective for everyone. From mental health in fragile settings to HIV research and innovations in children’s hearing, these talks highlight challenges and opportunities in building healthcare that works for all.
The Art of Inclusion
Shahreen Chowdhury
(Research Associate, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine)
People with psychosocial disabilities, particularly in fragile settings, are often denied access to health and social care due to poverty, stigma and the invisibility and complex history of disability and mental health. Partnering with people with lived experience and caregivers in Liberia and Bangladesh, we used creative methods to explore the barriers shaping exclusion. These methods enabled people to be the storytellers of their own narratives, using imagery and narration. In this talk, we highlight how person-centred approaches can promote inclusive and just health systems.
HIV/AIDS - How Close Are We To A Cure?
Dylan Postmus
(Research Associate and PhD candidate)
Although effective treatment is now given to most people living with HIV (PLWH), these medications have to be taken lifelong to keep the virus in check and no accessible cure is currently available. With cuts to foreign aid funding and a recent spike in HIV cases in the UK, progress made in controlling the HIV pandemic seems to be under threat. But how close are we to a cure? The answer, it turns out, is complicated. In this talk, we’ll break down the past, future and surprising present of the pandemic that never left.
How to hear better and who needs to hear it?
Thomas Hampton
(Clinical Lecturer)
Join us for a whirlwind tour of the latest breakthroughs in children’s hearing testing, from the UK to innovations happening across the globe. We’ll then dive into our own research, exploring how assistive tech and new hearing devices could transform how we detect and support hearing loss in young people.
