How Cities Impact us and what we can do about it

Cities are full of promises: better transport, fairer access, lower emissions. But how do we know if they actually work in practice? In this talk, I will show how anonymised mobile phone data can reveal how people really move through cities, at a scale that traditional data cannot capture. Focusing on ambitious climate targets such as those set for Paris 2030, we will explore what it would take for cities and their citizens to reduce emissions without making everyday life harder, and whether that is truly realistic.

In this session we’ll explore what thousands of public comments made in
response to proposed housing developments can tell us about objections
to new homes in London. Using machine learning to analyse this data at
scale, we can start to unpack the roots of “NIMBY” attitudes and consider
how a better understanding of public sentiment could help address the
housing crisis.
