Come and listen to some truly explosive volcano-centric climate science from Jenni and Manoj. Jenni will take us on a journey from the centre of the volcano, all the way to our atmosphere and Manoj will be busting some myths about volcanoes and climate change. Prepare to learn all about our planet’s gassiest giants, how they impact human life and the world around us. You might even get the chance to make some eruptions of your own!!

Always With A Bang? How Volcanoes Give Gas To The Atmosphere.

Professor Jenni Barclay (Professor of Volcanology at the University of East Anglia )
Volcanoes are the chimneys of the natural world, they are the pathway through which many gasses such as water vapour, SO 2 , and CO 2 make their way from deep in the Earth’s mantle up to the surface. We have all seen the spectacular pictures of volcanoes erupting those huge clouds of ash but what we can’t always see are the gasses being released. Join Volcano Jenni to take a tour of the volcanic system and find out not only how those gasses reach the surface, but how they impact our everyday lives!

How do Volcanic Eruptions Contribute to Climate Change?

Dr Manoj Joshi (Lecturer in Climate Dynamics at the University of East Anglia )
Everyone has heard of climate change, and everyone has heard about volcanoes. It has been claimed that volcanic eruptions have released more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than the human race over the past century or so. Well, our climate expert Manoj is here to put that claim to the test and together we will discover how volcanoes really affect climate change….the answer might not be quite what you would think!
