Psychosomatic: the mind-body connection

Dr Isobel Williams (Psychology)
Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder - possibly the most common neurological condition that you’ve probably never heard of! Our discussion will include studies that we have conducted at Sheffield on body awareness (including a hands on demonstration), patterns in heart rate, impairments of consciousness, as well as control of facial movements and how these may be linked to the disorder. Join me for a lively discussion of one of the ultimate examples of the mind-body connection in medicine.

Does society cause mental illness?

Professor Richard Bentall (Psychology)
This talk will debunk the idea that psychiatric disorders are inherited conditions and explain how recent research has shown that social, economic and environmental factors that impact on our mental health are all around us and affect us every day. Come and explore the factors that we could change to improve the mental health of the population, including the way that we bring up our kids, the organisation of the cities we live in, the promotion of economic justice and improving the ways in which different social and cultural groups inter-relate.
