Potential pathways leading from parasite infection to childhood stunting.

Isobel Gabain (PhD student, Royal Veterinary College & London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine)
Childhood stunting is defined as falling at least two standard deviations below the height-for-age WHO standards. Globally, stunting affects approximately 149.2 million children under 5-years. The underlying mechanisms leading to stunting remain elusive, and few effective treatment and prevention strategies exist. Aside from inadequate and insufficient nutrition, evidence points towards a key role for parasitic infections. Here, I will discuss potential pathways by which parasitic infection of mother and child during the first 1000 days of life may lead to stunting.

Connecting the real and artificial through affordable design

Dr Angus Clark (Research Associate, Imperial College London)
Millions of people around the world live with a limb difference, such as an amputation. With a high cost, advanced prosthetic devices that make you look like ironman are really cool - but unrealistic for most people as they either cannot afford or access them. How can we bring the substantial benefits these technologies provide to people in some of the most remote and poor places in the world? This talk will investigate the design of low-cost prosthetic devices and will discuss both the engineering and logistical considerations that need to be addressed.

Oculomics - what our eyes reveal about our general health

Dr Siegfried Wagner (MRC Clinical Research Training Fellow, University College London)
The eye is the only part of the body where we can directly and non-invasively see the nerves and small blood vessels. This talk will discuss how we can further our understanding of general health conditions, from heart attacks to Parkinson disease, using eye scans.
