Your brain is making things up. Scientists are making brains in the lab. This evening is guaranteed to mess with your mind. Join at your own risk.
Your brain might be lying about your age
Samuel Maddox
(PhD Student)
Did you know your brain might be lying about your age? While your birthday says one thing, brain imaging and AI might reveal another. Scientists can now estimate “brain age” as a biological clock that doesn’t always tick in time with the calendar. But what does it mean if your brain looks older than you are? In this talk we’ll see how machine learning helps us predict “brain aging”, discover why some brains may stay younger for longer, and investigate how these digital insights are making us rethink aging.
Using stem cells to model forebrains in a dish
Aarushi Vaidya
(PhD student, Grocott Lab, University of East Anglia)
Join my talk to explore the fascinating world of stem cell biology and neuroscience. Human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs), first discovered by a group in Japan, Takahashi et al. in 2007, are unique cells reprogrammed from adult cells. These cells possess the remarkable ability to self-renew indefinitely (pluripotent) and can transform (differentiate) into any cell type in the human body (totipotent). These special cells can be transformed into models of forebrain development to understand the signalling processes that underlie the complexity of brain development and disease.
