Ever wondered about the power of what we say (to ourselves and others) and how it shapes our world? Join us to discover how meditation can quiet your inner critic and transform self-talk, uncover the surprising ways your brain "talks back" to your ears, and dive into the science of calling out prejudice—does it actually make a difference? It’s all about the conversations happening inside and out!
The Power of Meditation
Sandy Belle Rosales Cadena
(Researcher, Psychology)
Imagine looking in the mirror and feeling at peace—not because you’ve changed, but because your perspective has. In this talk, we’ll explore how meditation, and a kinder inner voice can transform the way you see yourself. Through simple meditation techniques, we’ll learn to silence self-criticism, embrace our bodies with gratitude, and cultivate a deep sense of self-acceptance. It’s not about striving for perfection—it’s about finding joy in who you are, right now.

How the Brain "Talks Back" to the Ears
Dr Adam Carlton
(Researcher, Biosciences)
How the ear “talks” to the brain is intuitive; sound enters the ear and cells detect it, then pass this information to the brain to be pieced it back together. But the brain provides feedback to the ears, and how this functions is less intuitive and not yet understood. Adam will introduce the concepts of how we think this feedback works, demonstrate this with an audio exercise, and discuss why researching this system is important for the treatment of hearing loss.

Does Confronting Prejudice Work?
Lilith Roberts
(PhD Student, Psychology)
Prejudice is an enduring problem in society – so how can we tackle it? Psychological science tells us there are many ways – but most (such as implicit bias training) require training, planning, and institutional support. But there is another that can be more spontaneous – calling out (confronting) prejudice when you see it. But does this actually work, or is it performative? Recent research has some answers – and some advice for how to confront well.
