Of Mice and Men

The Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute conducts leading research spanning the whole spectrum of cancer - from investigating the molecular and cellular basis of cancer, to translational research and the development of therapeutics. Some of this work requires the use of laboratory mice because of the limitations of computational or cell-based assays. Dr Wilkinson and Ms Lopes shall explain how our studies with mice help us to understand cancers and identify possible therapies. Animal studies are also required by regulatory bodies before potential treatments can be tested in humans.

Using animals in experiments remains highly contentious. The UK has been at the forefront of providing oversight and regulation for the animal’s treatment (Cruelty to Animals Act 1876) and research (Animals [Scientific Procedures] Act 1986). The UK Laboratory animal research governance oversees the use and welfare of laboratory animals and relies on replacement, reduction, and refinement (3Rs) principles to demonstrate active conscious and responsibility.
