Tackling Pancreatic Cancer in Glasgow: from Buckfast to BRCA

Mr Stephan Dreyer (Clinical Research Fellow at University of Glasgow)
Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers, with little improvement in survival in the last 50 years. Modern DNA sequencing technology has revealed the genetic changes that cause this disease and is opening the door to innovative and creative treatment approaches. We have learned that each patient’s cancer is different at the molecular level, and that begs the question – should we be treating all patients with the same treatments? In this talk, we will reveal the potential of personalised medicine in pancreatic cancer and how we can bring major scientific advances into clinical care.

Thinking Inside the Box

Dr Shehab Ismail (Junior Group Leader at CRUK Beatson Institute)
Our immune system can protect our bodies against harmful intruders such as viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites but it also can identify cancer cells and get rid of them. Shehab will introduce how our immunity can fight cancer and what the new advancements are in finding treatments that can help our immune system in getting rid of cancer.

It's an Oxidant Waiting to Happen

Dr David McGarry (Post-Doctorate Researcher at CRUK Beatson Institute)
Antioxidants (those chemicals found in healthy food) are remarkable in how they protect the body against disease and illness. However, cancer cells have an unusual way in which they can hijack these defence systems to their own advantage. But what exactly is an antioxidant and why are they so important? Come to think of it, what is an oxidant and why is it so bad in the first place? Or are they even really that bad at all? David will look to answer these questions and share some ideas on why it’s not all that clear in cancer.
