The challenge of tactile sensing in robots

Dr Carlos Garcia Nunez (Research Assistant (Electronic and Nanoscale Engineering))
Modern robotics have achieved dexterous manipulation skills to substitute or assist humans. Under extreme circumstances like space, under-water, or disaster expeditions where human life could be in danger, robots could be made to survive. With robots improving human life in so many ways, we need to equip robots with sensors mimicking human features. Out of these, touch sense is the most important one as it is uniformly distributed over human body. In this talk, we will learn about touch sensitive artificial skins for robots, allowing them to feel surrounding objects through a controlled way.

Who Teaches the Machines?

Dr Kevin Worrall (Research Associate (Systems Power and Energy))
Machine learning, AI, Autonomous systems, Facebook, Fake news, real news… Who is teaching the machines to identify what we want to see? What are the rules for learning? What is the difference between yes and no? This talk hopes to provide the audience with the basic information that will allow them to draw conclusions on the massive field of machine learning. A field that has become so pervasive in society some don’t even know where in their life it is having an impact. Of course the machines may disagree.

Pepper - The Mall Entertainment Robot

Dr Amol Deshmukh (Research Associate (School of Computing Science))
Dr Bart Craenen (Research Associate (School of Computing Science))
The advances happening in Artificial intelligence it’s becoming evident that robots are going to enter our lives in the near future to help humans with their daily activities. The MuMMER project (MultiModal Mall Entertainment Robot), a European Union Project aims to develop a humanoid robot with the social intelligence to interact autonomously and naturally in the dynamic environments of a public shopping mall.  Our robot (“Pepper” by SoftBank Robotics) exhibits socially appropriate, engaging and entertaining behaviour by combining speech-based interaction with non-verbal communication.
