Join us for a wonderfully eclectic evening exploring everything from how the brain obtains language, to how climate change might affect fertility, and the weird and wacky science in between.
Where does language live in the brain?
Ieva Andrulyte
(PhD Student in Neuroimaging)
Language is a key to our everyday communication, yet countless questions about the language organization in the brain are not answered. One of the most important ones is what side of the brain do we use for language and why? In her talk, Ieva will explain why is it important to not only study grey matter regions, but also the white matter tracts connecting them.
Quiz Time!
Test yourself against the rest of the budding scientists in Leaf, and the other venues across the country! Due to speaker illness, Hot Sex: Fertility in the Age of Climate Change will be replaced by a chance win yourself a prize. You can play along on your phone at kbit.tv and the quiz will be live scored with leader board as we go!
How to levitate a frog: The science we didn’t know we needed
Jon Newnham
(PhD Student)
Have you ever wondered how to unboil an egg? Or why toast always seems to land butter side down? No? Me neither, but these are some of the pressing questions our top minds are currently working on. Learn about the discoveries we didn’t need, the inventions we didn’t ask for, and the silly (and often rude!) acronyms scientists use for their creations. Join me on a journey though the weird and wonderful, and learn why these discoveries aren’t actually as useless as they initially seem.
