Utilising human stem cells to generate mini forebrains in a dish

Aarushi Vaidya (2nd year PhD student, Grocott Lab, University of East Anglia)
Human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) are unique. Reprogrammed from adult cells, they are able to self-renew indefinitely (pluripotent) and can differentiate into any type of human body cell (totipotent). The forebrain helps controls voluntary movements and regulating essential functions. Creating human forebrain models is critical to understand the signalling processes underlying brain development and disease. To uncover these intricate gene networks, I am developing both 2D monolayer models (single cell layer) & 3D organoid models (mimic the brain’s architecture and development).

Peripheral arterial disease and biomarkers: What are they and what do they do?

Chloe Harding (Intercalating Medical Student/Masters of Clinical Research Student)
Ever wondered why some people develop conditions but others don’t even with similar lifestyles? Peripheral arterial disease affects about 20% of people over 60 but there is still limited understanding on the mechanisms behind it. Simple blood tests can discover biomarkers like matrix metalloproteinases and circular RNA but why are they important? How can we use these molecules to predict disease progression or anticipate the development of the disease before the patient experiences symptoms? Come discover what biomarkers do in our bodies, how they lead to diseases and potential future roles.
