The Art of Making Friends: It’s Complicated… From Screen to Real Life
Timipado Silikowei-Imomotebegha
(Doctoral Researcher)
Making friends should be easy, right? But in a world where socialising happens through screens just as much as in person, forming real, lasting connections has become more complicated than ever. Why do we struggle to connect? How has technology changed the way we build relationships? And most importantly how can we break through the awkwardness and make friendships that actually last?
In this interactive session, we’ll break down the science of friendship in five key stages:
Our Brains Have Changed – How technology and modern life have rewired the way we connect.
Why Is It So Hard to Just Connect? – Social anxiety, overthinking, and reading social cues.
Am I the Problem? – Self-sabotage, insecurities, and the fine line between being authentic and overcompensating.
The Science of Friendship – What actually makes relationships last?
Knowing When to Let Go – When to walk away and make space for better connections.
But we’re not just here to talk we’re here to practice. We’ll wrap up with a Speed Friendship session (think speed dating but for friendships), where you’ll put everything you’ve learned into action and maybe even start Stage 1 of a new friendship today.
Whether you want to build new friendships, strengthen existing ones, or just feel more confident in social situations, this session is for you. Let’s take friendships from screen to real life real quick.
