Marine litter is one of the most significant issues currently facing the world’s marine environment, not only threatening oceans, seas and all what lives within it, but also communities and economies that depend on them. Thus, reducing the impact marine litter has on the marine environment is now at the forefront of several international initiatives. Cefas influence and leadership in this issue spans a wide spectrum of expertise.

Shining a Light on Plastics

Thomas Maes (Marine biologist at CEFAS)
The presence of tiny plastic particles (commonly termed microplastics), from sources such as clothing or cosmetics, is an emerging cause for concern in the marine environment as they can be ingested by marine life. CEFAS has developed new technology in collaboration with UEA, which helps scientists measure the concentration of micro plastics by measuring the emission of bright orange or red fluorescence from stained particles! Could this help save our marine environment?

Talking Rubbish

Cheryl Moran (Marine scientist at CEFAS)
Marine litter is human-created waste that has either deliberately or accidentally been released into our waterways. Join marine scientist Cheryl Moran as she explains why we all need to clean up our act in order to save our coastline!
