We'll take a step back to access, is how we educate our kids productive, or are we jeopardising their futures. We will investigate why the word Pythagoras makes you shiver with Prof. Sue Johnston-Wilder and how to address these feelings of anxiety around maths. While Jenna Nilson will discuss with us compelling evidence to show how using drama helps to nurture language development.

So you know people with maths anxiety – what happened to them?

Sue Johnston-WIlder (Associate Professor, University of Warwick)
So many people I meet are anxious about maths or statistics. My response is 'what happened to you?' This is a safeguarding issue. The solution we have developed here at Warwick is spreading round the world. I would like to explain how everyone can learn to address adverse prior experiences and re-engage with maths safely and discover their own potential in this area. I would love you to read this parent's story before the session: https://www.mathsontoast.org.uk/how-talking-about-maths-suddenly-became-easier/

Drama-Based Language Pedagogy: Engaging Multilingual Creativity

Jenna Nilson (PhD Researcher, University of Warwick)
This presentation will focus on key findings from my master's thesis project: Exploring Critical Intercultural Language Pedagogy Through Process Drama, and discuss how my findings inform the conceptual and practical framework for my broader doctoral research project on drama-based methods of language teaching with migrant youth. I centre the work of critical education theorists and theatre practitioners as an intervention in language teaching and learning. I will discuss how drama can create a sense of play and enjoyment in sharing cultural and linguistic perspectives.
