What Would You Do If You Knew 'The News' Before Everyone Else?

Building upon years of research within Glasgow University, our algorithms monitor social media to automatically detect breaking news, before it breaks. By analysing the text within ~2,000 tweets per second our artificially intelligent approach identifies news as it happens, before it hits the mainstream. Two years ago my colleagues James McMinn, Prof Joemon Jose and I spun our company “Scoop Analytics" out of Glasgow University’s information retrieval department. Since then, we have built a web dashboard allowing financial day traders to get access to pre-breaking, market-moving news.

Escaping Reality with Spherical Displays and Virtual Environments

Unusual interactive devices such as spherical displays and head mounted virtual reality give us the opportunity to step away from everyday life into compelling digital experiences. Julie’s research explores how to design these experiences and how to invite people to interact with technology in new ways. Her work brings together computing science and digital art to create immersive installations for public interaction.
