Water is one of the most precious and essential resources on earth and we want to take you on a deep dive to learn all about our oceans and rivers from Amazonian fishing to micro plastics polluting our oceans!

Microplastics on the move: how ocean transport affects the global movement of pollution

Dr Natalie Welden (Lacturer in Environmental Science and Sustainability)
Using ink, salt, water, ice and a bit of hot air, Dr Natalie Welden will demonstrate the reasons why our oceans move the way that they do. By exploring the movement of water around the globe, Natalie will uncover the effect that waves, tides and current have on the global movement of pollutants, species, and people.

Fishing for Change: A Deep Dive into the World of Amazonian Fishing

Mar Pineda (PhD Researcher)
Discover the fascinating world of the Amazonian aquarium industry, where we will explore the intricate ecosystem of the Amazon and the immense diversity of the fish that call it home. From jungle to tank, our journey will take us on a deep dive into the impacts of this fishing practice. Along the way, we will discuss the potential for evolutionary change, the role of local communities and the future under climate change. So come along and join us as we cast a wider net over the aquarium industry and our role in shaping change.

Enhancing Glasgow’s Climate Resilience Through Rain Gardening

Prof Vernon Phoenix (Professor at the University of Strathclyde)
Climate change is making Scotland wetter with increasing rainfall and an increase in abundance of more extreme storms. To help tackle this, the Glasgow Avenues program aims to establish a network of raingardens across the city centre. These nature inspired systems collect storm water from roads, allowing the water to filter away more naturally, preventing flooding. Moreover useful pollutant munching bacteria (which love anything from diesel to dog poo), help the removal of pollutants, ensuring the stormwater can be released safely into the River Clyde.
