You may have recently heard about the discovery of gravitational waves, but you might be wondering what all the fuss is about? This is your chance to learn about this and some other exciting discoveries in cosmology and particle physics! Glasgow research teams will lead us in a journey through the universe (with some beer refueling in the middle).

Even more! Drygate Brand Ambassador will teach us about the science behind Drygate Brewing Co. beers, so don't miss this amazing night.

Mine’s a double: Quantum gravity from quarks and gluons

Dr Chris White (Theoretical Particle Physicist)
The best theory of gravity is Einstein’s theory of General Relativity. However, it breaks down at the center of black holes and in the Big Bang. Physicists expect it will have to be replaced by a new theory, so called “quantum gravity”. Recently, an amazing relationship has been discovered between possible quantum gravity theories, and the theory describing the particles that live in the centre of atoms, thus giving us a whole new way to think about gravity. Chris will describe the basics of this new theory, and provide insight into the current research in Glasgow.

Beyond the Standard Model

David Miller (Theoretical Physicist)
In 2012 the Higgs Boson was discovered. This was the last piece of the puzzle in the “Standard Model of Particle Physics”, which explains all of the forces that are at play inside atoms. But, this can’t be the end of the story; there are still mysteries that the Standard Model can’t explain. David will talk about some of these mysteries and how new theories are being built to deal with them.

Listening to Einstein’s Universe: The Discovery of Gravitational Waves

Professor Martin Hendry (Professor of Gravitational Astrophysics and Cosmology)
On September 14th 2015 two giant laser interferometers known as LIGO, the most sensitive scientific instruments ever built, detected gravitational waves from the merger of a pair of massive black holes more than a billion light years from Earth. Martin will recount the inside story of this remarkable discovery – hailed by many as the scientific breakthrough of the century – and explore the exciting future that lies aheadas we open an entirely new window on the Universe.

Science of the Pint

Chris Moriarty (Brand Ambassador for Drygate Brewing Co.)
Drygate is the UK’s first experiential craft brewery, restaurant, and event space. Nestled in the historic brewing heart of Glasgow, where brewing has been ongoing since the 16th Century, we’re here to open the doors of great beer to the unsuspecting public.
Collaboration and creativity are the nuts and bolts of Drygate – working together to create something truly unique.Taking you on a journey from the everyday to the exceptional.
