Can you keep a secret? If you can, join us tonight to hear about some superhero science we've cooked up on campus with our marvellous materials scientists. Meanwhile in a hidden secret aerospace laboratory located on the University of Surrey campus in the Faculty of Engineering we have some pretty special research going on. We'll tell you what we can, but you can't tell anyone else ok?
Secret projects in the Surrey Aerospace Labs
Dr David M. Birch
(Senior Lecturer in Aerospace Engineering)
Much of the commercial research and development work done in the aerospace world is either confidential or classified, protected by draconian non-disclosure agreements or the Official Secrets Act. As a consequence, some of the most exciting work is hidden from the public, kept behind locked doors. In this presentation, Dr. Birch will carefully skirt between the lines of the non-disclosure agreements to give away as much as he can about these truly amazing projects without getting himself sacked, arrested or deported.
Secret Science of Superheroes
Dr David Jesson
(Research Fellow and Manager of the Mechanical Testing Facility)
Dr Mark Whiting
(Senior Lecturer in Metallic Materials, Director of the MSc in Advanced Materials)
Dr Suze Kundu
(Teaching Fellow)
The authors of three chapters in the popular science book, The Secret Science of Superheroes join forces tonight.
Dr David Jesson is trying to understand the world by breaking or bending it through the “Mechanics of Marvellous”, and the materials science behind super-stretchy superheroes.
Dr Suze Kundu will be delving into the science of supersuits, from Ant Man to Zodiak.
Dr Mark Whiting studies engineering alloys in the hope that he can make them stronger, stiffer and tougher and together absorb vibrational energy leading to vibranium and Captain America’s shield(of course).
