The Housing Crisis and Women's Safety in Manchester

Isis Barei-Guyot (PhD Student in Development Policy and Management)
In the last few years, there has been a re-invigorated political response to the issue of violence against women and girls and women’s urban safety in the UK. This research uses Manchester, UK as a case study city to analyse these political responses. Findings indicate that the policy impact to support women’s safety may be limited, in context of Manchester’s housing crisis. This short talk will explore the relationship between housing and women’s safety.

Austerity and Futures: Researching Creatively

Dr. Liz Ackerley (Research Associate, Geography Department, The University of Manchester)
How do young people view their futures in times of austerity and intersecting crises? How can we research young people’s lives and futures sensitively within this context? This talk highlights the creative methods we have been using as part of the Austerity and Altered Life-Courses project, as well as sharing some initial reflections from our conversations with young people in Greater Manchester, Sardinia and Barcelona. I will discuss how research methods can create space for reflection, connection, and solidarity, and you will have a chance to get hands on with one of the activities.
