Join Us for "Body and Beyond: Our Body" – An Event Exploring the Science of You!

Discover the incredible ways our bodies evolve, adapt, and heal at Body and Beyond: Our Body! This exciting event brings together experts to explore the latest advancements in health, skin science, and human biology.

What to Expect:
 •   Insights into how our bodies change over time and ways to enhance well-being
 •   The science behind skin behavior, healing, and medical innovations
 •   Engaging discussions that bridge science, health, and everyday life

Moving Through Menopause: Exercise, Body Image, and Menopausal Quality of Life

Sophie Temple (Doctoral Researcher)
This talk explores the role of movement and exercise in enhancing body image, boosting mood, and supporting mental well-being during the menopausal transition.

The discussion will examine findings from PhD research on how physical activity shifts the focus from appearance to body functionality, fostering a sense of accomplishment and renewed confidence. By engaging in movement, women can develop a healthier relationship with their changing bodies and improve overall well-being during this life stage.

Join us as we explore how embracing movement can empower women to navigate menopause with strength and self-assurance.

"Unravelling the Mechanics of Skin Cells: Modelling Keratinocyte Behaviour through Finite Element Simulations"

Sarjeel Rashid (Doctoral Researcher)
This talk explores the critical role of keratinocytes in wound healing and disease progression, highlighting how mechanical stress influences their behavior.

The discussion will examine how experimental and computational techniques, including Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA), are used to simulate keratinocyte responses in 3D environments. By bridging the gap between laboratory research and clinical applications, we’ll uncover new insights into cell damage, regeneration, and conditions like chronic wounds.

Join us as we explore cutting-edge computational methods, such as strain-based cell death modeling and adaptive remeshing, and discover how these innovations are shaping the future of skin health research.

Computational Modeling of Human Skin: Insights into Scar Formation and Incision Design

Buse Yilmabasar (Doctoral Researcher)
This talk explores the intricate mechanical properties of human skin, the body’s largest organ, and how its structure influences wound healing and surgical outcomes.

The discussion will examine the role of collagen fiber arrangement in the dermis, which forms areas of higher tensile strength known as Langer’s lines. Using a finite element model, this study simulates the effects of tensile forces on incision orientation, revealing how cuts parallel to Langer’s lines narrow under tension, while perpendicular incisions gape. These findings align with existing research, reinforcing the importance of Langer’s lines in stress distribution and surgical planning.

Join us as we explore how advanced modeling techniques enhance our understanding of skin mechanics, improving surgical approaches and tissue engineering innovations.

A brief history of vaccines: from cowpox to covid

David Miles (Author of How Vaccines Work)
This talk explores the evolution of vaccinology, from its origins in an 18th-century barnyard to the cutting-edge biotechnology of today.

The discussion will examine how Edward Jenner’s discovery in 1797—protecting a child from smallpox using cowpox—laid the foundation for vaccine development. Nearly a century later, Louis Pasteur revolutionized medical science by proving that microbes cause disease and modifying them to create vaccines. These principles have shaped immunization strategies for over 150 years.

Join us as we trace the journey of vaccinology, uncovering how scientific breakthroughs continue to adapt to the ever-evolving world of microbes, bringing life-saving vaccines from the laboratory to the pharmacy shelves.
