“Will this get me cancelled?”: The dilemmas of researching hot button topics

How can we do research on ‘hot button' topics with humanity but also rigour in our so-called cancellation culture? Join Beck Lowe and Dr Béré Mahoney, for a review of the ethical and moral dilemmas of doing research on contentious issues. Using work from Beck’s PhD on the controversial self-diagnosed autism on TikTok, they suggest this social trend has welcome but worrying consequences for the neurodiversity movement. As an autistic PhD student, Beck will confront the challenges of balancing compassion with publishability, ones that many researchers have when exploring contentious issues.

Covers, Collectivity and COVID-19

Within days of the onset of COVID-19 imposed social distancing, the world’s media were reporting on spontaneous displays of ‘balcony singing’ from Italian cities. As pre-pandemic social and musical rituals were relocated to virtual settings, well-known musicians and performers embraced these practices from their own domestic surroundings. The unifying factor for these ‘coronamusicking’ performances was the cover version. Join Lou Aimes-Hill to look closer at how covers became a ‘pandemic perfect bonding tool’.
