Physical activity (PA) - be this dancing around the house, walking with friends or playing sport - is a central aspect of wellbeing. We are better off when we can be active – but for some groups this is more difficult than others. Drs Mee and Richardson are, respectively,  working with women and disabled people to spotlight how access, enjoyment and positive impacts of PA among these marginalised groups can be enhanced. Through heat mitigation (women) and recovery through sport (disabled people), new innovations for wellbeing can include EVERYONE, especially those previously side lined.

Improving females’ health and performance by mitigating heat strain

Dr Jessica Mee (Research Fellow (UK Research & Innovation Future Leaders Fellow))
Climate change continues to increase the frequency, intensity, and duration of extreme heat events. Reductions in work productivity and heat illnesses, that are associated with extreme heat events, are largely avoidable with the implementation of effective heat mitigation strategies. Existing guidelines are underpinned almost exclusively by research conducted in males, without consideration of sex differences including the menstrual cycle and menopause. This talk will discuss avenues to change the existing landscape to better support females’ health and performance during extreme heat events.

“I AM the Captain of my Fate”: The Impact of the Düsseldorf 2023 Invictus Games

Dr Emma Richardson (Senior Research Fellow)
The Invictus Games is a multi-sport event for wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans from around the world. Last year, researchers from the University of Worcester travelled to Düsseldorf for the 2023 games to evaluate the impact the games have on the recovery of the competitors and their families. Through stories and photographs, we invite you to join us for an update on the journey so far!
