We all have a role to play in keeping society safe and healthy. But what does that actually look like and how can we each play our part? From being active bystanders, to expressing consent in a clear and positive way, the talks in this session will consider how science can help to create a positive, safe and healthy culture for everyone.
What would you do? The Role of Bystander Intervention in Tackling Sexism & Misogyny
Dr Gill Harrop
(Senior Lecturer in Forensic Psychology and Lead for the UW Bystander Programme, University of Worcester)
What would you do if you witnessed sexism or misogyny? Would you speak up or just go about your day? Maybe even brush it off as 'banter'? Bystander intervention focuses on those who witness problematic behaviour and gives them tools to intervene safely and effectively. The UW Bystander Programme has been found to increase people's confidence and likelihood to intervene, as well as reducing victim blaming and hostile sexism. This talk will consider the role that active bystandership can play in achieving positive change by tackling misogyny and sexism.
Consent Cultures & Positive Sexual Consent
Holly Barnes-Bennetts
(Lecturer & Postgraduate Research Student, Media & Culture and Sociology, University of Worcester)
Much attention is given to the problems of non-consent in sex; rape and sexual assault are major social issues but how can we hope to address this until we also understand how consent does work.
This talk will focus on what good practice looks like in sexual consent. We will explore how we can all be having better conversations about how consent communication can work to make sex better for everyone.
Come along to find out how research is addressing how we say YES!
