Join us at Giddy Goose to go on an epic journey from fluid flows to atomic flaws, star clusters and newborn planets. With varied speakers from across the city, we will be exploring how physics shapes our world across the scales.

Instabilities in sliding fluids and the effect of molecular tadpoles

Anna Katsiavria (Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Medical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Dundee)
Multi-layer flows tend to be very unstable in general. To increase the fun we add surfactants: molecular tadpoles that help us breathe and allow the fluids to slide on one-another and explore the emerging instabilities.

Detection and Identification of Point Defects in Energy Materials using Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy Techniques

Aryaveer Singh (PhD student in the Department of Physics at the University of Dundee)
Atomic-level point defects are the simplest yet most influential imperfections in solids, significantly affecting the physical properties of materials, thus making their precise detection and identification essential for advancing the design and durability of next-generation energy devices.  Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) offers unique sensitivity to vacancy-related defects at the atomic scale, allowing the characterization of open-volume defects and the estimation of their concentration.

Young stellar variability in the Perseus clusters

Ernesto Mustienes Rondo (PhD student at the University of Dundee)
Our telescopes on Earth constantly map the sky providing us with huge data sets from stellar-cluster observations. What we can learn from this information and with what tools will be discussed in this talk.

Exomoons: Where Are They Hiding?

Soko Matsumura (Lecturer in Physics at the University of Dundee)
Our Solar System is packed with moons --- over 450 of them. Yet among the 6000+ planets discovered around other stars, not a single moon has been confirmed.  So where are they?  In this talk, we will explore why exomoons may be harder to find and keep than we expect. Soko Matsumura is a lecturer in Physics at the University of Dundee.
