Have you ever wondered what science can teach us about society? From your daydreaming doodles to Da Vinci's seminal works, drawing may have more power than you might expect. Hear about how young people of Sheffield bust myths about modern drinking and how we may have Star Trek to thank for items we rely on today. Please join us at the pub on Wednesday to discover more.

From binge-drinking rebels to sober snowflakes? Busting the myths around trends in youth drinking

Dr Laura Fenton (Researcher, Health & Related Research)
Have young people really gone from being 'binge-drinking rebels’ to ‘sober snowflakes’ over recent years, as much of the press would have us believe? This interactive session busts myths around why young people’s drinking looks so different from that of previous generations. As well as learning about the surprising story of youth drinking today in the UK and beyond, you will hear the stories of the young people from Sheffield involved in our research.

The Power of Drawing

Simon Chadwick (Researcher, Architecture)
A short analysis of the anatomical studies of Leonardo da Vinci as proof that drawing is not just an illustrative tool, but a powerful investigative research methodology.

From Science Fiction to Science Fact: How Star Trek Changed The World

Dr Aimee Paskins (Researcher, Neuroscience)
Did you know that the first flip-phone and tablet computers were created thanks to the communication devices used by the crew of The Starship Enterprise? Or that the writings of Jules Verne inspired both helicopter and submarine manufacturers? Join us for a journey from science fiction to science fact, and find out the inspiration behind many of the day to day items we use without ever even thinking where they came from.
