From tangled genes to cutting-edge cancer immunotherapy, tonight dives into the microscopic world shaping our health. We’ll explore why motor neurone disease can appear randomly, how the immune system can fight cancer, and whether nutrients might help manage ADHD.

Jumbles of Genes: Why does Motor Neurone Disease Happen Randomly?
Sarah Gornall
(Postgraduate Researcher, Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience)
We hear a lot about our DNA and how it can cause us to become ill- but how does it actually work? Why do some things get carried in families, but the same disorder happens completely at random? Sarah discusses how combinations of genes can make some people ill but others completely fine, and why it seems like there is a new genetic risk gene in the news every day.
Cancer Immunotherapy: A Molecular Call to Arms
Scott Parker
(Postgraduate Researcher, Clinical Medicine)
Some types of cancer are deadlier than others. Tumors often become lethal when they successfully avoid or turn off the immune system. After much research, scientists have discovered many of the signals cancer cells use to accomplish this. More importantly, we are now developing medicines that block or reverse these signals. Their use in patients spurs the immune system into tumor cell-killing action. Scott explores how one of these therapies works in glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer.
Me, ADHD and 5-HTP: can we use nutrient supplements to help with ADHD?
Eleanor Jackson
(Postgraduate Researcher, Psychology)
ADHD is a widely known and diagnosed condition, but what is actually going on in peoples brains? Hint; its not just a lack of dopamine! Join us for a magical mystery tour of the neurodivergent brain, the serotonin system, and how we could potentially use food and nutritional supplements to help manage ADHD symptoms.
